SIGHTSEEING
Don’t miss out on the island’s historical and religious gems.
Explore the architectural remnants of the Venetian era. Many noteworthy sites to choose from such as churches, monasteries and the castle of Aghia Mavra standing proud at the harbor’s entrance.
Aghia Mavra Fort
One of the most remarkable sites of Lefkada is the castle of Aghia Mavra, which is strategically located at the harbor’s entrance. It was built as a fortress, in order to protect the island’s population from invaders such as pirates. It was built during the Venetian era back in the 14th century and it played a significant role during the Ottoman occupation since its siege by the Turks in 1479. Today the fortress is open to the public daily with free entrance and it is available as a public venue for events and concerts during the summer season.
Sacred Monastery of Faneromeni
Another beautiful site is the Sacred Monastery of Faneromeni. It is a historical monastery, dedicated to the Assumption of Holy Mary, who is the protector and patron saint of the island. It is just 3km away from the city center, on a route full of trees. Apart from the rooms that are designated for welcoming visitors, there is also a library and a small zoo with different kinds of birds in the churchyard. The Sacred Monastery of Faneromeni celebrates annually on the Greek bank holiday of the Holy Spirit, so it is a great opportunity to visit the island for a long weekend.
Churches
The main attractions of Lefkada are its churches. Most of them were established after the 17th century and feature strong, Venetian, architectural influences. The most famous ones are the temple of Aghios Spiridonas and of Aghios Nikolaos at the central square of Lefkada. Other beautiful churches are those of Holy Mary the Evangelist and of Saint Minas, Viktoros and Vikentiou on the high street of the city market.
Grand Cape
Finally, on the south tip of the island, the grand Cape Lefkatas prevails. It is a natural monument sculpted by the elements of nature. White sheer rocks extend 60m high from the sea level and elicit awe from anyone who witnesses them. According to local folk stories, this is where Lefkada Island took its name from. Another one describes how on this exact spot, the female poet Sapfo committed suicide because of her unfortunate love for Phaethon. This is also where “Doukato” is located; a 14m high lighthouse which started operating in 1980. The views and the sunset from this spot of the Cape are amazing.
